You are still doing everything. You just can't feel it.
A gentle 5-step protocol from therapist Jolena Nicol that brings feeling back through your body, not through talking. You start tonight, at home, with no talking about the past and no art skill, and you will feel the difference in your very first session. Why years of talking never thawed it, why pushing harder made it worse, and what trauma researchers found about the body's oldest protection. Start with her 3-minute welcome, just below.
Sunday afternoon. Your granddaughter came through the door at a run and threw her arms round your legs. You laughed at the right moment. You said all the right things. And part of you watched it happen from somewhere a few feet behind your own eyes, wondering why the moment you had waited all week for did not quite reach you.
On the drive home, the guilt arrived. What kind of grandmother feels nothing?
If it is not a grandchild, it is something like it. The funeral where everyone cried and you sat dry-eyed. The song from your wedding that is now just noise. A friend ringing with wonderful news, and you saying "that's wonderful" in a voice that sounds right and feels like nothing.
From the outside you look fine. Nobody can see it, which is what makes it so lonely. Perhaps someone close to you has said it out loud: you seem so far away lately. And you could not argue.
It reaches further than feelings. You drive somewhere and cannot remember the journey. You read a page three times. You do not notice you are hungry, cold or worn out until it is extreme. Some days the world looks slightly flat, as if there is a film over it.
And the years are going by. The birthdays. The Christmases. The short years when the grandchildren still run to you at the door. You are there for every one of them. And you are missing them. Every month the dial stays down is another month of your one life that you will not get back.
You have tried. You talked it through, read the books, journalled, made the gratitude lists, pushed yourself to go out when you did not want to. Some of it helped you understand why you went numb. Very little of it changed how your life actually feels.
Underneath it sits a fear you rarely say out loud: that if you let one feeling in, the rest would come at once and you could not stop them. So the lid stays on. And a quieter fear under that one. That this is just who you are now. Older, calmer, flatter. A little less here than you used to be.
Here is what almost nobody is told. The numbness, the fog, the autopilot, the tears that won't come and the far-away feeling are not five problems. They are one. It is one of the oldest reflexes the human body has. It is not a flaw in your character, and it is not a sign that you love people less. It is a dial your body turned down to keep you safe, and nothing ever told it to turn back up.
And a dial can be turned back up. Imagine next Sunday. The door opens, small arms go round your legs, and this time it lands. All the way in. Warmth rises in your chest before you have thought a single thing. Your eyes sting, and you let them. You are not watching from a few feet behind your eyes any more. You are right there, inside the moment you waited all week for.
That is what this letter is about. Not understanding your numbness better. Feeling your life again: the tears that come when they should, the love you can feel in your body, the laugh from all the way down, a world back in full colour. And the first of it comes in your very first session, tonight.
In this letter you will find out:
Why your body turns down joy along with the pain, and why that is a sign of protection, not a lack of love.
Why animals come out of a freeze once the danger has passed, and why people so often stay in one for years. A 2015 paper in the Harvard Review of Psychiatry spells it out.
The oldest branch of your vagus nerve, and the shutdown it can switch on without asking you.
Why years of talking about it can leave you exactly as numb, and the way in that does not need words.
Why pushing yourself to feel more can make the freeze hold tighter.
What happened when researchers handed 39 adults some art materials, and why having no experience of art made no real difference.
What you will notice in your very first session, and why it means the dial has started to move.
If you have not watched it yet, start with the short film at the top of this page. It is Jolena Nicol, the therapist who teaches the protocol, and her first words are these: "There is nothing wrong with you. This is your nervous system doing its best to keep you safe."
What the research says
Feeling flat, foggy or unreal is not a flaw in you. One cause of it is rarely explained, and it sits in the body, not the mind. Three pieces of work explain it.
Every human is born with a set of defences that are "hard-wired" and "automatically activated". First the body goes on alert. Then it fights or runs. It can freeze, a fight or flight put on hold. And when there is no way out, it can go limp and shut down, a response of last resort. These run through deep parts of the brain and the vagal nerve centres. They are reflexes, not choices. Then the line that matters most: animals generally go back to normal once the danger has passed. People often do not, and can stay "locked into the same, recurring pattern" long after it is over. The authors call shifting that pattern the necessary first step.
Kozlowska K, Walker P, McLean L, Carrive P. Fear and the Defense Cascade: Clinical Implications and Management. Harv Rev Psychiatry. 2015;23(4):263-287.
Porges proposes that the vagus nerve, the long nerve linking your brain to your heart and gut, has an older branch and a newer one. The newer one helps you feel calm and connected to people. The older one, the dorsal vagal pathway, can shut the body down when danger feels inescapable: numb, flat, heavy, far away. In his account it is not chosen. Other scientists still debate parts of the theory. We include it because it gives the freeze a place in the body, on the same nerve our Vagus Nerve Reset works with.
Porges SW. The Polyvagal Theory. W.W. Norton, 2011.
Van der Kolk argues that recovery from overwhelming experience has to involve the body, not only words. It may be why a person can understand exactly why they went numb, and still feel numb.
van der Kolk B. The Body Keeps the Score. Penguin, 2014.
Numbness is protection. And protection can learn that it is safe to stand down.
Put together, they point one way. If the freeze is a reflex in the body, the thaw starts in the body too. That is exactly where Unfreeze starts, and why it reaches what years of talking could not.
The hidden cause
Key idea
The Freeze Dial. When life was too much, your nervous system turned one dial down to protect you. It has no fine-tuning: the grief and the joy, the hunger and the love all go down together. And it has no setting that turns itself back up.
Picture your feelings as a radio with one volume dial. When life became too much, too loud, too frightening or simply too long, your body did something clever. It did not switch off the sad songs. It turned the whole dial down.
That is the freeze. In Porges's account it runs through the oldest branch of your vagus nerve, far below the part of you that thinks and decides. And it worked. It got you through the loss, the marriage, the years of caring for someone, the childhood where feelings were not safe to have. It is part of why you are still standing.
But the dial has no fine-tuning. It cannot mute grief and leave joy playing. It turns everything down together: the pain and the pleasure, the warmth and the wanting, the signal that you are hungry or cold or tired, even the sense of being fully here in the room. That is why the numbness, the fog, the autopilot, the dry eyes and the far-away feeling so often travel together. They are not five problems. They are one dial, set low.
The Freeze Dial
Grief and hurt
Joy and laughter
Love for your people
Hunger, cold and tiredness
Feeling here, in the room
It cannot turn one down and leave the others playing. And it has no setting that turns itself back up.
Where the five steps cut in
Breath, gentle movement, colour, humming and a few objects from home. Small signals of safety the body can believe, so the dial comes up a notch at a time. Never all at once.
And the dial does not turn itself back up. That is the point the Harvard Review of Psychiatry paper makes: animals generally go back to normal once the danger has passed, while people often stay locked in the same pattern long after. So you can be safe now, loved now, and still feel almost nothing. After enough years it stops feeling like something that happened to you and starts feeling like who you are. One Neurotoned member put it like this on Trustpilot: "...there is a part of me that is frozen. It has been that way for so long that I did not really notice it."
Now look at what you were told to do. Talk it through. But the dial is not run by the part of you that talks. You can understand every reason you went numb and stay exactly as numb. Push yourself. Go to the party, force the big feelings up, throw yourself at something intense. But to a frozen system, sudden intensity reads as danger, and danger is the very thing that turned the dial down. So it holds tighter.
None of that was your failure. You were handed tools for the wrong part of the system. Amy, a Neurotoned member, said it plainly on Trustpilot: "I didnt make progress in my trauma healing till I recognized my body and started using it to heal".
If you know Neurotoned, you know the idea under everything we teach: a nervous system still set for a danger that has passed. Our Vagus Nerve Reset is for a system stuck turned up, on high alert. Unfreeze is for the other way it gets stuck. Turned down.
So the way out is not more force, and it is not more words. It is giving that old, low part of you small signals it can believe: that right now, in this room, it is safe to let the dial come up a notch. And every notch it comes up, you get more of your life back. More warmth when someone you love walks in. More taste in your food, more music in the music. More of you, here.
The way back
Unfreeze does not ask you to force feelings up. It makes it safe for them to come back by themselves. In Jolena's words from her welcome: "we're not forcing anything awake. We're simply offering your body small, compassionate invitations to reconnect one moment, one sensation, one breath at a time."
It is the principle Peter Levine, who developed Somatic Experiencing, built his work on: what the body holds comes out in small, tolerable amounts, never all at once and never by force. A notch, not a flood. It is the answer to the fear of the floodgates too. Every session is short, and you can stop the moment you want to.
And it goes around words, through four things a frozen body can still do without being asked to explain itself: move, make a mark, make a sound, and hold something in its hands. Breath and gentle swaying. Colour on paper. A sigh, then humming. A few ordinary objects from your home. And you do not have to relive the past to thaw. Nothing in the five steps asks you to.

That is the picture above. In Step 2 you sway to gentle music, then put that same movement onto paper in crayon. Nobody sees it. As Jolena says while you do it, "it's not what it looks like. It's about becoming aware of your inner sensations and your body."
If you are thinking "but I'm not creative", good. In a 2016 study, 39 adults spent 45 minutes making art, and the stress hormone cortisol in their saliva fell. Whether they had any past experience of making art made no significant difference. This is not about talent. It is about giving your body something to do that is not thinking.
Ruth, writing on Trustpilot about the Neurotoned app as a whole: "Am going very slowly and gently with it, and am feeling the benefits. For me, it reaches parts of me that nothing else quite has."
You will feel the difference in your first session. Jolena tells you what to watch for: the urge to yawn, a deeper breath. In the next one she says it again: "maybe a yawn, maybe a sigh, maybe even a smile. Allow that and welcome it." Those small things are the dial starting to turn.
Then the bigger things come back. The song from your wedding that tightens your throat again. A laugh that comes from all the way down. A hug you are actually inside of. Tears that finally come, and feel like relief. Colour in a world that has looked grey for too long. In her welcome Jolena calls it reconnecting with "the parts of yourself that have been waiting to be felt." This is what being here feels like. Not watching your life from behind glass. Living inside it.
Key idea
Not forcing feelings up. Making it safe for the dial to come back up, until you can feel all of your life again.
Your teacher

Jolena Nicol is a qualified occupational therapist and certified Imago Relationship Therapist who specialises in Expressive Arts and Emotion-Focused Therapy. She is the founder of Create2Change, where she blends clinical expertise with expressive arts to help individuals and couples through relationship challenges and personal growth.
She is known for an integrative, creative approach that works through both traditional talk therapy and artistic mediums. That matters here. She knows what talking can do, and where it stops. Unfreeze is the other route in, for when you have already talked it through and are still behind the glass.
On camera she is calm and unhurried. She does the practices with you rather than at you. During the movement she plays gentle music and stops talking, so the only voice in the room is your body's. She keeps most of her own Step 5 objects in a bag, so they cannot sway your choices. And she says it more than once: there is no right and no wrong way.
One Neurotoned member, after decades of counselling, wrote on Trustpilot: "I have learned more... about healing somatically and the myriad of little somatic movements, breathwork, etc., than I have in 3 decades of seeing counselors."
The 5-step protocol
A short welcome, then one guided session a week with Jolena, each one you can do in an evening, and each one bringing you further back into your own life. Go faster if you like, or stay on a step for as long as it helps. You need a quiet, private space, some paper, whatever crayons, pastels or pencils are in the house, and later a few objects from around your home. No art skill, no singing voice, nothing to get right.

Jolena's welcome, the film at the top of this page: what the freeze is, why it is your nervous system doing its best to keep you safe, and how the four weeks bring you back to feeling present, alive and connected again.
Why the protocol starts with safety, not feelings. Gentle swaying and rocking to music, then that movement onto paper in colour, with your other hand if you want to try it. And why you stop the moment your body says it is done. The first thaw starts here, tonight.
Dot-making: colour as a way to let a little feeling stir without a single word. Why the colour you pick is the first one that catches your eye, not the one you decide on. And what to do when a yawn, a sigh or a smile turns up: welcome it. It means feeling is coming back.
Your voice, without singing. A sigh, then humming, then one long, comfortable note. Why Jolena asks you to choose that note with your body, not your mind, and what she says to the part of you that thinks "I can't sing". The hum you feel in your chest is what Jolena calls your full aliveness.
Eight ordinary objects from your home, among them one for what supports you, one for joy and one for the freeze itself, arranged into a small private installation. Then a few journal questions for your eyes only, such as: what is thawing inside of you? By now, you will have an answer.
Fifty pages to keep beside you. Short private reflections after each step, so you can look back and see exactly how far you have come. And eleven more gentle practices beyond the videos, among them the Soundbox Regulation Technique (a bowl of rice, a mug and a spoon), Emotional Distance Mapping with Color and the Inner Seasons Collage Method. Print it, or keep it on your phone.
Neurotoned's daily programme, 41 more videos for whenever you want more than the five steps. Among them Day 11, From Dissociation And Numbness Into The Here And Now, and creative practices such as a flow and release drawing, a mandala and a vision collage. Yours for life, free with Unfreeze.
What changes for you
This is where the five steps take you. A notch at a time, starting in your very first session.
Not numb. Not on autopilot. Here, and alive.

I have done a few weeks into this course and already very helpful, feeling my body relax, also feeling much safer, wasn’t aware how bad a state I was in… Due to my health and time being limited I enjoy that it is not strict times, instead you get to go through at your own pace
Stop Surviving and Start Living As someone who has been stuck in survival mode for years, I so appreciate this program that meets me where I’m at. It is gentle and supportive each step on this journey. It is refreshing to participate in a program that truly speaks to a dysregulated nervous system! Thank you
Neurotoned appeared at the moment when I most needed something to help me understand and start to heal from years of being stuck in survival mode and continuous cycles of intense anxiety. The 30 day Program is a very clearly mapped out journey to follow through and it is comforting and helpful to know you can always return to any step as many times as you feel necessary. It is presented in a format that I found very user-friendly and with a balanced and do-able amount of content for each day.
Small steps add up... I am an experienced, trained trauma counsellor with extensive knowledge about the subject of trauma, the way your nervous system protects you. Serving others by offering support has been my life purpose. Not understanding why my breakthrough through somatic experiences wasn't sustainable I tried Neurotoned. Its not a self help book.. Its a way of living. Acting out suggestions through exercises that embodies experience.. Moving from logic to feeling. Even though I am not techno savvy I find my way navigating through the programme at my own pace, no pressure. It works for me.. Early days but I believe even small wins will add up to teaching my body how to let go. Optimistic that it will happen...
There is a great variety of information which is presented in different ways - so it is easy to find the way that resonates. The practices are very gentle and allow and encourage everyone to work at their own pace, which is very settling for the nervous system. There are many different approaches and different teachers in the programme, so it is easy to find the one that resonates. I have found customer care to be very helpful and supportive. There is a lot of information available and it can be confusing until it becomes familiar - but the support team are available to help with that. The thing that nearly stopped me engaging was the initial upselling - which I don't like - but I am very glad I went ahead and have not found that on ongoing concern.
Great for nervous system work! I've been struggling with resting but not feeling rested, and I realized the nervous system was the disconnect. The modules here have been a really practical way to start to shift and transform my relationship with my nervous system and in my body. I've loved their 30 day program! It's been one of the best investments I've made!!
After childhood, teen years, the rush of parenting and putting others first... ..there is this empty nest grief... Then... What am "I" to do, live, believe, choose, learn, care for "me"? There is a lot to learn. But who to trust? What do these words mean? How to apply what I learn? How to attend to long negemlected aspects of my body, mind, Beliefs, self image? Neurotoned helped, felt authentic, was wholesome, gentle, opened possibilities, and felt satisfying.
I really like the low demand way that… I really like the low demand way that this is presented. I was a bit nervous that it would be a bit “airy-fairy” but it’s not- they give plenty of alternative options if what they are suggesting feels weird for you. I really like that.

Because we would rather thousands of people who have been living on low try this than a handful who can afford weekly private sessions. This brings Jolena's way of working into your home, for good.
And because you have probably already spent a great deal, in money and in hope, on things that helped you understand the numbness without changing it. This one changes how your life feels, and it should be an easy yes, with every cent back if it is not for you.
What it costs you to find out: about fourteen minutes tonight, a crayon, and the phone already in your hand. What it gives you back is your life in full colour.
For the price of the programme, you could instead have:

Watch Jolena's welcome and do Step 2 somewhere quiet tonight. Go as slowly as you like. You will feel the difference before the session is over. Then give the five steps 30 days, and watch the colour come back.
If it isn't for you, for any reason, email support@neurotoned.com within 30 days and we refund every cent. No conditions, no questions, no forms, and nobody on the phone trying to talk you out of it.
We can make it this easy because the dial in you was never broken. It was turned down to protect you, and it can come back up. The risk is ours, not yours.
Thirty days. Feel it, or every cent back.
It was never going to work, and that was never your fault. The part of you that went quiet was not lazy or cold. It turned the dial down to get you through, at a time when you needed it to.
It does not need to be fought. It needs to be shown, slowly and often, that it is safe to let the dial come back up. That is what the five steps do: one notch at a time, at a pace your body can trust, until you are all the way back.
Picture it a few weeks from now. A song comes on and your throat goes tight, in the good way. Someone you love walks in and you feel it land, warm, right in your chest. You cry at the film, and you laugh until it hurts. You remember the drive home. You taste your dinner. You are not watching your life any more. You are in it.
And here is the reason not to wait. The dial does not turn itself back up. Every month it stays down is another month of birthdays and Sunday afternoons you are there for and not inside. The grandchildren will not always run to the door. You do not need to feel ready. You need about fourteen minutes tonight and a crayon. The 30 days are on us.
One payment. Lifetime access to the program. 30-day guarantee.
If you have been living behind glass for a long time, reading a long letter about it takes something. That you did tells you a part of you is still reaching. That part is worth listening to.
One payment. Lifetime access to the program. 30-day guarantee.
You don't need a name for it, or a story big enough to justify it. Unfreeze is for numbness and shutdown, whatever started it: a loss, years of caring, a long marriage, a slow wearing down. The Neurotoned member quoted earlier, Polly, wrote on Trustpilot about a month when Unfreeze was the members' topic. She began: "When I first saw that topic for this month was Unfreeze, I thought that it would not really apply to me." She ended: "This exercise really has awakened that part of me. How freeing." Yes, this is for you.
Both. Unfreeze is for the everyday experience of each: the flat, foggy, far-away, autopilot feeling that settles in after a hard season or a hard life. It is built to bring you back from exactly that, into your body, into the room and into your own life.
No. It is never too late for the dial to come back up. The freeze is a reflex that stayed switched on, not a fixed part of who you are, however long it has been. The sessions are short and gentle, you choose the pace, and you will feel the first shift in your very first session. If it isn't for you, the 30-day refund means finding out costs you nothing.
You will feel something, even if it starts small: the urge to yawn, a deeper breath, a sigh, a smile you did not plan. Jolena shows you how to notice each one, because that is the thaw starting. Unfreeze asks for no pressure and no performance, so there is nothing to fail. The workbook catches the shifts that are easy to miss, so you can see the dial coming up week by week. And if after 30 days it isn't for you, email support@neurotoned.com for every cent back.
Yes. There is no art skill involved. Step 2 is loose lines in crayon, Step 3 is dots, Step 4 is humming rather than singing, and Step 5 is a few objects from your home. As Jolena says in Step 2, "it's not what it looks like." Nobody sees anything you make. One Neurotoned member wrote on Trustpilot: "The art ones are fun and relaxing. The program is creative and has different ideas".
No. Nothing is said to anyone. The closest the programme comes to words is a few journal questions in Step 5 and the short reflections in your workbook, and those are for your eyes only. As one Neurotoned member wrote on Trustpilot: "The Neurotoned program can provide you with tools to help work through your trauma gently without the need to confront the traumatic events."
No. Step 4 is a sigh, some humming and simple toning on one comfortable note. Jolena expects "I can't sing" to come up and answers it in the session: it is not singing, and nobody is listening but you.
The sessions are short and gentle, you choose the pace, and you can stop any time. Feeling comes back a notch at a time, never in a flood. If anything feels like too much, pause, come back another day, and go even more slowly. If you are in crisis, please reach out to a professional or a local helpline straight away.
No. Unfreeze is a self-guided programme you do at home, taught by Jolena Nicol, a qualified occupational therapist. It reaches the part of you that talking cannot, so it sits well beside any care you already have.
Unfreeze is not for a crisis, or for anyone who needs support in the room right now. If you are losing large stretches of time, finding yourself somewhere with no idea how you got there, or feeling unsafe, please speak to your doctor or a mental health professional first, and if you are in crisis contact a local crisis line or emergency services. Unfreeze is for the long, quiet flatness and far-away feeling that has settled in over months or years.
A quiet, private space where nobody will check in on you, a sheet of paper, whatever crayons, pastels, pencils or paint you have in the house, a scarf or piece of cloth if you like, and for Step 5 a few objects from around your home. That is all.
Unfreeze itself is about 48 minutes of video in all: a three-minute welcome and four sessions of around ten to fourteen minutes. The steps are laid out one a week, but you can go at whatever pace suits you, and repeat any of them as often as you like. The 30-Day Program that comes free with it is there whenever you want more, at your own pace too.
Unfreeze: Jolena's welcome and four weekly guided sessions, which make up the 5-step protocol, and the 50-page Unfreeze Workbook with eleven more practices. And free with it, the full 30-Day Neurotoned Program: 41 more videos, yours to use whenever you want more. One payment, lifetime access to all of it, on the Neurotoned app.
No. One payment, nothing recurring, nothing to cancel. Unfreeze is yours for life, and so is the 30-Day Neurotoned Program that comes free with it. One thing you should hear from us rather than find out on your own: at checkout you may see one optional add-on, and straight after it one optional offer to try the full Neurotoned membership. Both are priced separately, and saying no takes one tap and changes nothing about what you bought.
Yes. Unfreeze is gentle practice, not medical treatment, and it does not replace your care. Keep taking anything you have been prescribed, and talk to your prescriber before changing it. If the numbness began around a change in medication, tell them that too.
Try it for 30 days. If it isn't for you, email support@neurotoned.com and we refund every cent. No conditions, no questions.
One payment. Lifetime access to the program. 30-day guarantee.
P.S. If you scrolled straight to the bottom: Unfreeze is a 5-step protocol from therapist Jolena Nicol that brings you back from emotional numbness, fog and that far-away feeling, so you can feel your life again: the tears, the love, the joy, the colour. It works through the body, with breath, movement, colour, humming and a few objects from home, so there is no talking about the past and no art skill needed. You will feel the difference in your very first session. It comes with a 50-page workbook, eleven more practices and the full 30-Day Neurotoned Program free. One payment, yours for life, and every cent back within 30 days if it isn't for you.
P.P.S. The one sentence worth keeping from this letter: the numbness was never a lack of love. It was a dial your body turned down to protect you. Turn it back up, and the love is still there, waiting to be felt.
