An unmade bed in flat morning light
Every practice can be done here, on the days getting up is the whole problem. Nothing asks you to build up to it.

First, is this even your problem?

Six questions. Answer them honestly in your head, and count.

Do you sleep a full night, or longer, and wake up feeling like you did not sleep at all?

Have your tests come back normal while you can barely get through a day?

Do you plan your week around what you will be able to afford, energy-wise?

Have you had one good day, used all of it, and paid for three?

Is there a basket or a drawer somewhere with supplements in it that did not work?

Has somebody who loves you suggested you just need more rest?

If you said yes to three or more, the rest of this page is worth eight minutes. If you said yes to none, close the tab with my blessing. This was built for a specific kind of tired and it is not the kind you fix with an early night.

Everyone who ends up here has already rested. Extensively. That is the evidence, not the missing step.

Here is what this page covers, in order.

  • Why a long stretch of genuine rest can change nothing at all, and what that result actually rules out
  • The reason supplements aimed at energy production keep missing, no matter which brand
  • The difference between a body that is relaxed and a body that has collapsed, which feel identical from inside and are opposites
  • Exactly what 7 free days involves, including how it works on a day you cannot get off the sofa

Why the obvious answers keep missing

You are not short of effort and you are certainly not short of advice. Here is the honest read on the usual list.

More sleep. The first thing everybody tries and the one that quietly proves the most. If exhaustion were a debt, a long enough stretch of rest would clear it. For most people reading this, it has already been tried at length and it did not. That is not a failure. That is a result, and it rules something out.

The supplements. Almost all of them are aimed at energy production. But a body in a protective shutdown is not low on the machinery for making energy. The system that decides whether to spend it has said no. You can keep feeding a factory whose manager has locked the doors.

Stimulants. Coffee, then more, then the crash, then anxiety stacked on top of the exhaustion. Borrowing against tomorrow at an interest rate you cannot see until the bill arrives.

Meditation apps. Built for a body that has already settled. Told to sit still and breathe deeply, a depleted system often just sinks further, and then you feel ashamed of failing at relaxing, which costs energy you did not have.

Yoga and stretching classes. A class runs on shapes, and on a room moving at one pace that is not yours. Turning up depleted and asking your body to hold postures for an hour spends energy the system had already refused to release, which is why you can leave one class lighter and the next one flattened for two days. Nothing here is held for the sake of holding it, and most of it happens lying down.

Talk therapy. Worth keeping, and not the same job. Insight arrives in language. The part of you that decided energy is too expensive to release does not read language, which is why you can understand exactly why you are exhausted and still be exhausted.

Medication. Doing a real job, and not ours to touch. Keep taking what you were prescribed and keep your prescriber in the loop. It can lift the floor; it does not by itself teach a protective system that it is safe to spend again, which is why the flatness often outlasts the dose. Plenty of members do both.

Pushing through. You are extremely good at this. It is how you held a job while feeling like that. It is also the input that got the system to lock the doors in the first place.

Look at what those have in common. Every one assumes the problem is supply. More sleep, more nutrients, more caffeine, more willpower. None of them touches the thing deciding whether your body is willing to spend anything at all.

The thing deciding

Underneath mood and energy sits the autonomic nervous system, and it makes one call constantly, far below thought. Is it safe enough here to rest, digest and repair, or do I need to stay braced?

When that question gets answered "brace" for long enough, and long enough can mean a demanding decade rather than a single event, the system can drop into its other protective setting entirely. Not fight, not flight. Conserve. It stops spending. Energy drops, sleep stops repairing properly, digestion slows, thinking fogs, expression flattens.

It is not weakness and it is not a mood. It is protection, doing precisely what it evolved to do, and it will not stand down because you have had a nice weekend.

You don’t come out of shutdown by resting harder.

Relaxed and collapsed feel the same. They are opposites.

This is the distinction almost nobody is given, and it is the one that explains the years.

Lie down at the end of a day that has taken everything and your body is still, heavy, doing nothing. That looks like rest. It can feel like rest. But a collapsed system and a settled system only produce a similar stillness, and just one of them is repairing anything.

Which is how a person can rest for three weeks and gain nothing at all. They were not resting. They were lying down inside a shutdown.

Rest is the absence of demand. Regulation is a signal. Only one of them tells the system it is safe to come back online.

Where your system sits

Wired

sympathetic

Braced. Heart going, jaw set, cannot switch off.

Settled

ventral vagal

The only state where the body repairs, digests and recovers.

Shut down

dorsal vagal

Flat, heavy, far away. Still, but not resting.

Shut down is not the bottom of tired. It is a different setting entirely, and it is the one that stops sleep from repairing you. Which is why more hours in it change nothing.

Lying down inside a shutdown

Collapsed

  • Still, heavy, doing nothing at all
  • Sleep runs its hours without repairing much
  • You wake at the same floor you went down at

The state you are aiming at

Settled

  • Also still, and completely different underneath
  • Digestion, repair and recovery switch back on
  • This is the state sleep needs in order to work
They look the same from the outside and feel almost the same from the inside. Being able to tell them apart is most of what changes.

The inputs that carry that signal are physical and unimpressive. A long exhale. A low hum in the chest. Light pressure at the base of the throat. Small movements that teach a heavy body the difference between settled and stuck. Roughly eighty percent of the fibres in the vagus nerve carry information up from the body to the brain, which is why the message has to go in through the body rather than through understanding.

How that works on a day you have nothing

One question when you open the app reads whether you are regulated, activated or depleted. On a depleted day, what you are handed is smaller, not larger. That is the opposite of almost every program you have tried, and it is the whole reason people with an energy budget can actually keep this one.

1

Check in

One question, about ten seconds. Regulated, activated or depleted.

2

Get less, not more

On a depleted day the practice you are handed is shorter. That is the design.

3

Keep what works

Anything that lands goes to your toolbox, one tap away on the days you cannot think.

A daily check-in that decides what you practice. One question a day reads whether you are regulated, activated or depleted, and what you are given next is sized for that answer. On a bad day it gets smaller. Nothing asks you to earn your way back with effort you do not have.

17 programs, in a deliberate order. Structured start to finish, not a pile of clips. Short practices you can do lying down, in a parked car, before a meeting. A new stretch unlocks each week so you are never staring at all of it at once.

Two live group calls a month. Real practitioners, the ones who built the programs. Ask a question, practice together, or keep your camera off and just listen. Every call is recorded, and the replay lands on your account with notes.

Progress you can actually see. A trend line of your check-ins, how far you have shifted since you started, and eight regulation milestones. The point is the trend, not a perfect record.

One free spot for someone else. A partner, a sibling, whoever holds you up gets their own full account on your plan, for as long as you are a member.

Your nervous system toolbox. The practices that worked for you, saved in one place, for the moment you need them and cannot think straight.

A guide in the app, and a buddy if you want one. An AI guide that knows the library and can point you at the right practice, plus optional matching with another member on a similar path. Ignore either entirely if you would rather work alone.

The community. Comment, ask, and read other people's weeks. Members only, moderated, and quiet by design.

Nothing is held back for a higher tier. One membership, all of it.

Who built the practices

Taryn Elise Herselman

Taryn Elise Herselman

Somatic practitioner, body-based therapeutic work

MA Psychology · 15+ years clinical practice

A Johannesburg-based somatic practitioner with fifteen years in clinical practice, twelve years of residency-style study in India, and an MA in Psychology. Her work centres on nervous-system recovery: stress, exhaustion, and the body's part in emotional health. The practices here were built around what a braced or shut-down system can actually absorb, which is why most of them are done lying down and none of them ask you to hold a shape.

If exertion has made you worse before

Plenty of people arrive here having been told to exercise their way out of this, and having been harmed by trying. So, plainly:

  • This is not graded exercise. Nothing asks you to do a little more each week, push through, or build tolerance by increasing load.
  • Every practice can be done lying down. Most are under ten minutes and several are under two.
  • The daily check-in scales the day's practice DOWN when you are depleted. A bad day gets you less, not a lecture about consistency.
  • It is not a treatment for ME/CFS, long COVID, fibromyalgia, MS or any diagnosed condition, and nobody here will tell you it cures one. It is nervous-system education.
  • If you get post-exertional crashes, speak to whoever manages your care before adding anything new, including this.

What changes, and roughly when

No promises about your outcome, and be suspicious of anyone in this category who makes one. This is the shape members describe.

First week

You start on a low-energy day rather than waiting for a good one, because low-energy days are what this is designed for. Most people notice falling asleep faster before they notice anything else.

Weeks two to four

Sleep tends to move first: not more hours, better ones. Waking up feeling like a person rather than like you were hit by something is the change people report at this stage.

Month two and three

You start being able to tell settled from collapsed, which sounds abstract until you have it. That is when the low days start being days rather than weeks, because you catch them earlier.

After that

The arithmetic quiets down. Not gone. But some week you spend half an hour on your feet, pay nothing for it, and it takes you until Thursday to notice you were not counting.

This was exactly what I needed. If you're on the fence about wether it's worth it, just do it! You won't be sorry!”

Katie Rowe

“I think the is easily the best resource I have ever found via the internet. Lots of gentle encouragement, but no pressure. Excellent resources that you can access in your own time. Really reasonable rates and no hidden gotchas. If anything about what they offer sounds like what you need then take the plunge. It’s not even a plunge, if you don’t want it to be ☺️”

Gabby

“For many months, I was scared because I was experiencing symptoms that I thought were signs of a serious illness. I visited doctors, underwent testing, and everything seemed to be fine. One day, while scrolling through social media, I came across Neurotoned and decided to give it a try. When I started following the techniques and practices of the different coaches, my life changed. I especially loved the vagal toning exercises and orienting and grounding skills. I still practice them every day.”

Ruth

“I am so pleased to have found the Neurotoned app. It has made it possible for me to access somatic practice in a way that works for me, at my own pace. Am going very slowly and gently with it, and am feeling the benefits. For me, it reaches parts of me that nothing else quite has. Thank you to all the lovely practitioners at Neurotoned!”

For context, most people reading this have already spent more than a year of membership on supplements that are now expired in a basket somewhere. That is not a dig. It is the actual comparison, and it is the reason the price is the least interesting thing on this page.

If it is not for you

7 free days first. We take card details to start the trial, and you are not charged if you cancel before it ends.

Cancel from your account whenever you like. We ask one question on the way out and there is a skip link right next to it, so nobody gets held in a retention maze.

No silent charges. Before a trial converts we email you three times, at three days out, one day out, and on the day, each with the exact date and the exact amount. Annual renewals get two more reminders.

Try it for 30 days. Do at least the first week of your plan, and if it isn't for you, email support@neurotoned.com and we refund every cent.

Two versions of next spring

In one of them you are roughly where you are now. Still rationing. Still running the arithmetic before you agree to anything, still working out whether a coffee with a friend is worth what Thursday will cost. Still being told everything came back normal. I am not being cruel about that version. It is survivable almost indefinitely, and that is exactly what is wrong with it.

In the other one, three things are different. You can tell settled from collapsed, so you stop mistaking one for the other and losing weeks to it. You have two or three practices that work on your worst days, so a bad day has a floor under it. And every so often you spend half an hour on your feet and pay nothing for it.

You are not cured. Nobody here is going to use that word. You have stopped organising your entire life around an energy budget you cannot see, and for most people that turns out to be most of it.

The distance between those two is one honest answer about which version of tired you are in, and 7 days of finding out whether the practices meet it.

You’ve rested long enough. Rest was never the input.
